Gogebic Community College
There are a lot of people that want to go to college and pursue higher education, but there are a lot of factors that limit them from doing so. Gogebic Community College, also known as GCC, is a public two year community college located in the city of Ironwood and the state of Michigan. The school was founded in 1932 as Ironwood Junior College. GCC has a main campus located in Houghton, also in the state of Michigan to serve the County of Houghton and the surrounding districts. GCC offers 2-year associate degrees, several certification programs, occupational training, and several other learning opportunities for the local community. The school is the home Mount Zion Recreational Complex, which is also operated and owned by GCC. The complex is run by the school’s students, staff and faculty from GCC’s Ski Area Management program.
The student newspaper of the college is called The Chieftain. The paper is a monthly publication that features school news, entertainment, opinions, and sports. There are also various student groups that are found on campus. This includes the Student Senate, ADAPT or Alcohol and Drug Awareness Program for Teens and the Campus Crusade.
The Mission of the GCC is to promote, aid, and encourage the Gogebic Community College in their development of education and the programs and expansion of the facilities. The community also supports the college and the foundation to award scholarships to students, to fund special projects of the students and the community, to assist in building construction and renovation projects, to communicate with the many Alumni and Friends through the quarterly newsletter, to provide cultural opportunities that enhance the educational experience, and to organize Alumni and Friends social events.
The school’s athletic Program fields five intercollegiate teams. The GCC is a member of the NJCA, and the school competes against teams from schools in the Michigan Minnesota, and Wisconsin area. The GCC sports teams include cross country and women’s volleyball during the fall season, and men’s and women’s basketball as well as Nordic skiing during the winter time.
